1990 Boxed and sealed silver proof five pence two-coin set
The 1990 Boxed and Sealed Silver Proof Five Pence Two-Coin Set is a collectible item issued by the Royal Mint. Both coins are struck in sterling silver (.925 fineness). The set mintage was limited to only 35,000 sets, making it very collectable.
The set comprises the old "large 5p" which weighs 5.65 grams and has a diameter of 23.59 mm, and the new "Small 5p" weighs 3.25 grams and has a diameter of 18.00 mm.
The reverse of each coin features the Badge of Scotland, a thistle royally crowned, designed by Christopher Ironside. The set comes complete with a Royal Mint box and a certificate of authenticity.
The set is significant because it commemorates the introduction of the new, smaller five pence coin in 1990, and it includes the last of the original five pence coins and the first of the new size.
